NEW CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF THE SAFETY NET
As the number of uninsured and underinsured Coloradans continues to climb, the cost of health care escalates and the caseloads of publicly funded health insurance programs increase, the health care safety net serves as the default, essential source of care for a growing number of vulnerable residents. This network of providers delivers medical, oral and mental health care to low-income uninsured and underinsured individuals, as well as people enrolled in publicly-funded health insurance programs.
Recognizing the importance of Colorado’s safety net and the challenges it faces, the Colorado Health Institute (CHI) created the Center for the Study of the Safety Net, to develop a data-driven reporting system that identifies, describes and monitors Colorado’s health care safety-net providers and the populations they serve. In particular, the first-of-its-kind center focuses on policy issues related to the state’s safety-net providers, the services they provide and the people who rely on them for care. Through its Safety Net Indicators and Monitoring System, CHI has collected and analyzed such data to also provide a progress report, on Colorado’s health care safety net.
